In Mexico, as in the United States and other countries, physicians who choose to specialize in a specific area of medicine must spend years of study and practical experience.
We will all need an ophthalmologist at some point in our lives; for those of us with vision issues a visit to the eye doctor will be an annual event.
An ophthalmologist is an osteopathic doctor (DO) or a medical doctor (MD) who has specialized training and experience in the care of eyes and vision. They perform eye exams and write prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses, but their expert specialization includes many more important eye care responsibilities.
Ophthalmologists also perform eye surgery, diagnose diseases of the eyes and treat the symptoms of those diseases, to include prescribing medication. Eye doctors are especially important for diabetics and others whose sight may be compromised by illness or affliction.
